CLAN MACRAE AND EILEAN DONAN
CASTLE EXCURSION

It is thought that the MacRaes first came to Kintail in the 14th century
having previously earned a reputation as fighting men while in the
service of the Lovats.
Having agreed to render the same service to the Mackenzie's in return
for lands in Kintail
The MacRaes became the Constables of Eilean Donan Castle.
The most photographed Castle in the
world having also been featured in the Highlander and James Bond films.
Supported by the Spanish it was used in the first Jacobite uprising in 1719, who used the castle as their magazine
Magnificently situated at the meeting of three lochs - Loch Long, Loch
Alsh and Loch Duich
Following the failure of the 1719 Jacobite Rebellion - in which all the
fighting was restricted to Eilean Donan Castle and Glen Shiel -
3 British frigates later sailed into Loch Duich and totally destroyed
the castle
It then laid in ruin for the best part of 200 years
Eilean Donan Castle remained neglected, abandoned and open to the elements.
Until Lt Colonel John
MacRae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911, along with his Clerk of
Works, Farquhar MacRae, they dedicated the next 20 years of their lives
to the reconstruction of Eilean Donan
Restoring her to her former glory
according to surviving ground plans and was completed in 1932
